How God Speaks: 4 Daily Ways to Hear His Voice

Have you ever wondered how God speaks to you today—or how He may have been speaking to you all along? When we slow down, listen, and grow in our relationship with God, we begin to uncover the creative, intentional, and meaningful ways He communicates with us each day.

For some, it’s through what we see—dreams, visions, or mental pictures. For others, it’s through what we hear or a deep inner knowing—God’s voice resonating in our spirit. However He chooses to speak, one truth remains: God is speaking. The real question is, are we truly listening?

In her book Created to Hear God, Bible teacher and author Havilah Cunnington outlines four powerful and practical ways we can learn to recognize God’s voice. Each method is personal, relevant, and designed to guide us—not just for our own lives, but also to impact those around us.

In this blog, I’ll walk you through the top four ways God speaks today, often through ordinary moments, so you can walk forward with greater peace, clarity, and confidence in your spiritual journey.

  1. Seeing: Speaking Through Vision & Dreams

One of the most powerful ways God speaks to us today is through seeing. People who receive this form of communication are often referred to as Seers—individuals who are gifted with spiritual vision and the ability to perceive what’s possible through God’s perspective.

Seers are often visual thinkers. They may receive divine messages through dreams, daydreams, mental images, and visions (Created to Hear God, p. 60). God uses these visual impressions to share insight, direction, and strategy—sometimes for the person themselves, and sometimes to encourage others.

What makes this form of hearing from God so unique is that it often reveals a big-picture view of the future—what could be when we partner with God. Not everyone sees in this way, which makes the Seer’s perspective incredibly valuable in both spiritual and practical ways.

Think about the world around you. Do you notice beautiful buildings, innovative businesses, thriving churches, or life-changing programs? Behind each of these was a visionary—someone who saw it before it existed. These are modern-day Seers. Their spiritual gift helped bring ideas into reality.

Whether you’re someone who receives visual messages from God or you’ve been inspired by someone else’s vision, this gift plays a powerful role in how God communicates with us and shapes the world for good.

2. Hearing: Speaking Through a Personal Voice

Hearing is a beautiful and direct form of communication that many people recognize early in their spiritual journey. You might hear someone say, “I heard God say…” or “The other day, God told me…” These individuals aren’t exaggerating—they’re describing what they genuinely perceive as a message from the Lord. These people are known as Hearers.

Hearers often experience God’s voice in a peaceful, clear, and unmistakable way. Sometimes it’s a gentle inner impression; other times, it may feel almost audible. Regardless of the method, God speaks to Hearers in a way that feels personal, direct, and intimate.

One of the most beautiful aspects of this gift is the sense of closeness it brings. It’s not that Hearers are on some kind of spiritual “VIP list”—rather, they simply have a unique sensitivity to God’s voice, like having a friend on the other end of a phone call. The connection is consistent, clear, and rooted in relationship.

These gifted individuals often serve as messengers, encouragers, or intercessors, sharing what they’ve heard to bring direction, confirmation, or hope to others. Their ability to discern God’s voice can be a powerful source of wisdom and guidance—not only for themselves, but also for those around them.

If you find that you often “hear” God in still moments, prayer times, or even during daily activities, you may carry the gift of a Hearer. It’s a gift that requires trust, practice, and a heart willing to listen and respond.

3. Knowing: Speaking Through Inner Intuition

Sometimes, God speaks not through words or visions—but through a deep, unshakable knowing in your spirit. This inner certainty acts like a spiritual compass, guiding you toward wise decisions and away from potential harm.

You’ve probably heard someone say, “I just knew in my gut…” or “I can’t explain it, but I felt strongly that…” This is the experience of a Knower—someone who receives direction from God through intuitive insight rather than external signs or audible messages.

My husband is a Knower, and I’ve watched him use this spiritual gift in both personal and professional settings. Many times, it’s protected our family, brought unexpected blessings, and simplified complex decisions—all because he trusted what God placed in his spirit without overanalyzing it.

Knowers tend to be confident and decisive, often sensing the next step clearly even when others are unsure. They might feel uncertain at first, but once that internal “yes” or “no” comes from God, there’s no turning back. As my pastor likes to say, “They know, that they know, that they know.”

Some may call it intuition or discernment, but for a Knower, it’s a deep inner awareness that aligns with God’s will. If this resonates with you, consider it a powerful gift. When you tune into it, God will lead you, open doors, protect you, and position you exactly where you’re meant to be.

4. Feeling: Speaking Through Emotional Sensitivity

Feeling is part of being human, but for some, it goes much deeper—especially for those who carry the spiritual gift of being a Feeler. These individuals are deeply sensitive to the Holy Spirit and often sense the heart of God the moment they walk into a room.

As a Feeler myself, it’s taken time to discern the difference between my own emotions and the feelings God allows me to experience on behalf of others. Many Feelers are misunderstood or labeled as “too emotional,” but what’s really happening is far more spiritual. They are picking up on the emotional and spiritual atmosphere around them—often carrying the weight of what others are going through, in addition to their own lives.

When this gift is nurtured with understanding, grace, and connection to Jesus, the Feeler can begin to experience true clarity and emotional freedom. They learn what is theirs to carry and heal from—and what they’re meant to lay at God’s altar in intercession.

Feelers are often powerful intercessors and carriers of God’s mercy. They don’t just want to understand what others are feeling—they deeply desire to see people healed, set free, and walking in spiritual wholeness. Their gift isn’t just emotional; it’s deeply prophetic and healing.

The Feeler holds a special place in God’s heart because He entrusts them with His own emotions and burdens—not to carry them alone, but to partner with Him in prayer, compassion, and mercy.

Loving & Discovering Your Prophetic Personality

The way God speaks to you is uniquely tied to who you are, how He created you, and what Havilah Cunnington calls your Prophetic Personality. Your primary communication style with God—whether Seeing, Hearing, Knowing, or Feeling—reflects your design and divine wiring. But it’s important to understand: the way God speaks to you may be different from how He speaks through you to bless or encourage others.

Havilah reminds us that recognizing this difference is not only okay—it’s essential. For instance, you might naturally be a Seer, receiving insight through visions or mental images. But when God wants to speak through you to help someone else, He may use a different channel—like a strong Feeling or impression—based on what that person needs in the moment.

As you go about your day, I encourage you to slow down and take notice of how God might be speaking. It could be through a sudden idea, a peaceful gut feeling, a clear word in prayer, or even a powerful emotion in a moment of worship. At first, it might be hard to identify which Prophetic Personality is most dominant in your life, especially if God has spoken to you in different ways at different times. But more often than not, there’s a consistent pattern—a primary way God chooses to communicate His heart to you.

Once you begin to recognize and embrace how God made you—and how He speaks to you personally—you’ll grow in confidence, clarity, and intimacy with Him. Keep track of these divine moments. Journal them. Pray into them. Get excited, because the God of the universe knows you by name and chooses to speak to you daily.
